Tooth decay affects both children and adults, hurting the health and often the appearance of the smile. Dr. Adrian Vande Merwe understands that treating dental caries is vital to protecting the health and stability of the smile. To restore teeth with cavities to full function and beauty, Dr. Adrian offers a range of dental filling options.
What Causes a Cavity?
Our mouths contain over 1,000 different bacteria. Regular brushing and flossing can help remove some of these harmful bacteria and the food particles they feed on. However, poor oral habits allow bacteria to break down sugars and other starches, increasing oral acidity and coating the teeth in plaque buildup.
Plaque weakens the tooth enamel, allowing bacteria to reach the dentin below the enamel and cause decay to form. Patients may soon notice tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, as well as toothaches. If you experience one or both of these symptoms, please make an appointment. We can diagnose the issue and recommend immediate treatment before the problem progresses any further. Avoiding treatment can allow the decay to reach the pulp, where a painful infection or dental abscess can form. To avoid this, you need to seek treatment.
Treating Tooth Decay
How do you address this issue? In most cases, we will place a dental filling. The process begins with the dentist removing decay from the tooth. Next, we will thoroughly clean the tooth before adding a composite resin or porcelain filling. Once complete, the remaining tooth structure will be protected from further damage.
For severe cavities, we may place a large restoration before considering a crown. If a filling isn’t enough to protect the tooth, we will prepare the tooth and remove a small amount of structure. We can then take photos and impressions of the tooth, which will be used to fabricate the dental crown. We will check the fit and place the crown using a powerful bonding agent. The crown fits over the visible portion of the tooth, so your tooth looks natural and is protected from further cavities or infection.
